Sharing drafts without losing track.

The hardest part of sharing an essay draft usually isn't the sharing. It's keeping track afterward — which version your counselor read, which comment was about which paragraph, and what you changed since.

Where shared drafts usually go wrong

  • The draft keeps moving. You share a Google Doc, keep writing in it, and a comment from Tuesday now points at a sentence that no longer exists.
  • Copies multiply. One file for your counselor, one for a parent, one you're actually working in. Within a week nobody is sure which is current.
  • Notes scatter. Some comments are in the doc, some in email, some in a text message. None of them are attached to a specific draft.

A simple sharing routine that stays organized

  1. Finish a full draft first. Save it as a version with a short note about where it stands.
  2. Share that specific version. Send a link to v3, not "the essay" — so everyone is looking at the same text.
  3. Keep writing in a new version. Your reader's comments stay attached to the draft they read, even as you move on.
  4. Compare before you decide. Put the shared version next to your latest one and see exactly what changed since your reader saw it.

Your essay, your decisions

Comments from a counselor, a teacher, or your aunt are just that — comments. Readers can leave notes, but they can't edit your essay, and nothing changes unless you change it. The writing is yours; the version history simply shows how it got there.

How EssayStory keeps shared drafts organized

Share any version through a secure link — read-only or comment-enabled. Readers open it in any browser without signing up, and their comments are anchored to the exact passage and version they read. Your own notes live in the same place. You can revoke any link at any time.
